Kupenga Stone Sculpture Symposium 2006What is the Kupenga About ---- the Stone ---- the Tools ---- Thanks ---- Location ---- Calendar ---- the Opening
Te Kupenga Stone Sculpture Society Inc. is organising their 7th biannual stone sculpture symposium at New Plymouth's in East End Park (next to Te Henui bridge)
Te Kupenga Stone Sculpture Society Inc. grew out of workshops conducted as a part of the Taranaki Festival of the Arts but has since then taken on a life of its own. Te Kupenga consists of mainly stone sculptors of whom most have been practising their art for years. Many are recognised nationally and some internationally.
The biannual stone sculpture symposium is now recognised in New Zealand and overseas as a major sculpture event. For this edition, 20 New Zealand artists and 7 international artists will be sculpting in the East End Park (next to the Te Henui Bridge)
The purpose of Te Kupenga is to revive and promote the art of stone sculpting, using Taranaki Andesite and to educate people about its history, properties and potential for artistic expression.
In addition to the symposia, Te Kupenga members have also run a series of workshops, focusing on the art of stone carving.
Te Kupenga Stone Sculpture Society Inc. has received ongoing and growing support from the New Plymouth public, New Plymouth District Council and New Plymouth businesses. This support endorses the enthusiasm of Te Kupenga members to keep the biannual symposium on the New Plymouth art calendar.
